The island of Majorca became a tourist destination in the 1950's and has grown tremendously as a holiday destination since. Today the island has over 1000 resort hotels and is one of the top holiday resort locations in all of Europe.
Having spent time there, I was struck by how marvelously the modern hotels and amenities are integrated with the old architecture to give the island a wonderful exotic ambiance. The selection of resort hotel choices is incredible, there probably isn't an island in the world with so many 5 star hotels on it.
While Palma is the largest city, with about half of the island's population living there, most of the top resorts are located in the smaller towns surrounding the island, such as Soller. Some of the best beaches on the island are Ciudad Jardin, Cala Major, Can Pere Antoni. If you tire of sunbathing on the beach, you can take in some of the exquisite old architecture like the 700 year old Royal Palace of La Almudaina.
Tourism has become the main industry on Majorca as over 20 million people holiday on the island each year. The Arabella is a beautiful Mallorca hotel, but keep in mind that it is a golf resort and is on a golf course not a beach. So if you want a golf vacation, the Arabella is perfect, but if you want a beach resort you might choose another like the Barcelo Formentor hotel or Iberostar Royal Cupido which are on nice beaches.
